North Carolina Mom Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Stone-Thrower

Posted on May 08, 2011
A mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Lexington, North Carolina, regarding the death of her daughter, who was killed at a party last summer.

In August, 17-year-old Shelby Chisom of Davidson County attended a party with a new love interest. When a relative of the woman’s ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Michael Craver of Lexington, saw that she was at the party with someone new, he threw a large brick through the windshield of the car she was in. The brick struck Chisom in the liver, fatally injuring her. The assault took place at about six in the morning on a Saturday, with Chisom dying later that morning at the hospital from her injuries.

Craver pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and faces up to twelve years in prison. Now Shelby’s mother, Lisa Hill Chisom, is filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the young man, whose friends say was active in church and with charities. The lawsuit claims that Craver was allowing underage teens to drink at the party and that he did not help get her daughter the medical attention that she needed immediately after the brick was thrown.

Craver’s attorney has responded to the allegations in the wrongful death lawsuit by saying that he believes many people were responsible for the high school senior’s death.
