Fatal I-85 South Carolina Accident Caused By Poorly Connected Trailer

Posted on Sep 30, 2010

Two children were left without parents this weekend after a homemade trailer detached from a vehicle and slammed into a car on I-85 in South Carolina.

The fatal car accident took place at 8:30 in the evening on Saturday, September 18, in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Anderson County. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a vehicle lost its home made trailer and left it in the middle of the road. A minivan struck the trailer and was then forced into the path of an oncoming truck.

The two adults in the minivan, 33-year-old Shirin Pirani and 34-year-old Sajid Pirani, were killed in the car accident while the couple’s two children, a three year old and a six year old, were rushed to Greenville Hospital, treated, and then handed over to mourning relatives.

After striking the trailer and the tractor-trailer, the Pirani’s mini van then collided with a third vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Johnny Estrich, who had parked on the shoulder of the road when he saw the disabled trailer blocking interstate lanes. Estrich, who was not in his car at the time of the accident, received minor injuries.

South Carolina police are searching for the owner of the trailer, which did not have a license plate. This was the third serious traffic accident caused by a trailer in South Carolina in the past year. Police officials say that there are far too few laws regarding small trailers, especially home made ones. In fact, drivers don’t have to learn how to properly hook up or drive with a trailer before making or purchasing one.
