A motorist was killed early Monday morning in a wrong-way wreck which closed inbound East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC) for several hours, reports the Charlotte Observer.
According to police, the wrong-way driver apparently got on the John Belk Freeway in the wrong direction, driving toward Independence Boulevard. The driver hit a median about 3 a.m. while driving outbound (east) on inbound Independence Boulevard, and the vehicle exploded into flames.
We don't know what caused the at-fault driver to get on the interstate the wrong way but we do know that an innocent person lost their life. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family at this difficult time.
Head on collisions can cause very serious injuries and although head-on collisions are a somewhat rare type of car accident, consisting of only two percent of all vehicle crashes, one out of ten traffic accident victims dies because of a head-on crash.
Sadly, wrong-way driving accidents are not uncommon. Roughly 350 people die every year in the U.S. in wrong-way car crashes, according to the Federal Highway Administration. From 1996 through 2000, over 1,700 people lost their life in wrong-way wrecks.
