when they were involved in a construction accident. All three were hospitalized with very significant injuries with one of them reported as having suffered severe head trauma.
According to authorities the overpass construction accident occurred at approximately 6:20pm on the eastbound lane of Highway 70 in Craven County. It is reported that the three laborers were working for a private company and were sandblasting the overpass of Highway 70 and Tuscarora Rhems Road when the construction accident happened.
North Carolina Highway Patrol stated that a cable was draped across the highway as the construction workers sandblasted the overpass, and then an RV heading eastbound got caught on the exposed cable, which almost immediately pulled one of the laborers down 30 feet from the top of the overpass, causing his serious injury.
That particular worker received severe head trauma during the process, while the two others escaped hitting their heads. According to WITN news, two workers were flown by Eastcare helicopter to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, and another was taken to Craven Regional Medical Center for injuries. The person in the RV was reportedly fine. There is no word in regards to traffic related charges as the construction accident is still under investigation.
Recovery from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) varies based on the individual and the brain injury. Attempts at predicting the degree of TBI recovery remain crude. Recovery can occur months, and even years, after the initial injury. These are the indicators that physicians usually use for for prognosis of brain damage/injury:
- Duration of Coma. The shorter the coma, the better the prognosis.
- Post-traumatic amnesia. The shorter the amnesia, the better the prognosis.
- Age. Patients over 60 or under age 2 have the worst prognosis, even if they suffer the same injury as someone not in those age groups.
