Two Students Seriously Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident in Sims, North Carolina

Comments (0)
Two students from Wilson County, North Carolina (NC) had their lives turned upside down when they were hit by an SUV as they tried to get on their school bus.

This awful incident happened at  the intersection of Rock Ridge Sims Road and Old Raleigh Road west of Interstate 95 (I-95). The two victims were brother and sister and they were only ages 10 and 5. They reportedly suffered broken bones and were hospitalized due to the severity of their injuries, according to ABC11.com.

The school bus was headed to Rock Ridge Elementary School. It was stopped with its lights on and stop arm extended when the collision occurred.

A red Ford Explorer hit the two children. The driver fled the scene of the accident, but was found relatively quickly behind a tobacco barn at a working farm, according to the ABC11 article. The driver is facing charges of felony hit and run, felony passing a stopped school bus, having no driver's license, no vehicle registration, and having a fake tag.

"The school buses are big. They're yellow, and they're there for a reason, and that reason is simple and that's to pick kids up and drop them off. So if you see one, they're going to stop eventually, so don't try to beat the bus stop," said Lt. Jeff Gordon of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Lt. Gordon's advice is on point. This terrible incident is a reminder of just how important it is to exercise extreme caution when approaching a school bus. And, of course, if the bus has its lights on, you must, under the law, come to a complete stop.
