Two Fatal Car Wrecks Within Hours of Each Other in North Charlotte

Comments (0)

Two teen-agers were killed in two separate accidents in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 12th in North Charlotte.

The first wreck occurred on NC 29 near the Cabarrus County line around 12:30 a.m. A fifteen year-old male was driving a 1992 Honda Civic southbound, on NC 29 (North Tryon Street). Police say he was speeding. The car crossed the centerline and struck a utility pole, the impact shearing the car in half. A fifteen year-old passenger was rushed to the hospital, but died a short time later. Two other passengers in the car were also hurt, but information on the extent of their injuries was not released. The driver received minor injuries.

The fifteen year-old driver has been charged with driving while impaired and driving after consuming alcohol under 21 years of age. Police say additional charges will be filed in connection with the crash.

The second accident happened about two hours later, on East W. T. Harris Boulevard. Police report that a 19 year-old was driving his 2006 Chevy Cobalt at high speeds when he lost control of the car and it skidded off the road, went airborne, through some trees and rolled several times. The driver was thrown from the car and was killed. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt. The passenger in the car, also 19, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and is expected to recover from his injuries. Both speed and alcohol were contributing factors to this crash, also.
