A report of the incident in The Herald indicates the SUV nearly hit two police officers, got on the interstate with officers in pursuit, reached speeds of 75 mph on Park Street after exiting I-85, and ran a red light. The SUV then sideswiped a PT Cruiser and hit an Audi.
Two people in the PT Cruiser sustained injuries, while the passengers in the Audi lost their lives. One of the deceased was a former Belmont mayor.
Shockingly, even after those crashes, the driver of the SUV jumped from his vehicle and ran. Police later apprehended the man. Addition charges filed include felony death by vehicle, two counts of reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, two counts of failure to stop at a red light, assault with a deadly weapon on government officials, speeding, driving with a license revoked and resisting a public officer.
