A van carrying three children was hit from behind by a delivery truck on U.S. Highway 19/74 in Cherokee County, North Carolina (NC). The van was hit so hard, it was propelled forward and hit the back of a car. The damage was severe and two of the children were killed. One of the children was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Erlanger Hospital, according to romenews-tribune.com.
My deepest sympathies go out to the parents who lost their children in this horrible chain reaction wreck. The family, originally from Trion, Georgia (GA) was enjoying a vacation in Cherokee and now their world has been turned upside down. This is a heartbreaking tragedy.
Unfortunately, many accidents in NC involve trucks of some sort. In fact, of the 1,500+ car accident deaths in North Carolina, 11 percent of these fatal wrecks involved large trucks, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
We don't know what caused the delivery truck to slam into the van. Was the driver distracted in some way? Were the truck's breaks working properly? These questions remained unanswered at this time. Police don't believe alcohol played a factor, but charges could still be pending for a traffic violation.
