Two Charlotte high school students were struck by a car as they were walking to school on Monday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the two Garinger High School students were crossing the street at the intersection of Eastway Drive and East Sugar Creek Road at approximately 7 a.m. when the accident occurred.

The two students, 16 year-old boy and 15 year-old girl, were waiting at a crosswalk on Eastway Drive, attempting to cross the street. A Ford pickup truck, which was heading north on Eastway, drove through a green light, and passed the two victims. Both victims stepped off the sidewalk to cross, both walked ran into a trailer which was attached at the end of the truck.

Both victims were transported to the hospital. The male victim is suffering from a fractured skull and bleeding from the brain and is in the intensive care unit. The female victim’s condition was unavailable. The driver of the truck has been cited for operating without a driver’s license.

According to reports, both victims thought the crosswalk was clear when the attempted to cross. The site of the accident has been deemed a dangerous intersection because of the history of serious accidents which have occurred here. There have been at least 65 accidents at the location in the past five years. Those accidents include 27 serious injury accidents and one fatal pedestrian accident. The last accident occurred in August and also included two high school student victims who were struck by cars in two separate incidents.

If you have been injured in a pedestrian accident caused by a negligent driver, contact an experienced North Carolina personal injury attorney to find out what legal recourse you may have against the driver for pain and loss.
