Transportation Bill Seeks to Improve Safety of Drivers and Pedestrians

The newly proposed principles for transportation legislation announced by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will affect much more than just cars and roads. This bill gives rise to major implications in regard to public health and climate protection.

A major public health concern is highway safety. This proposed transportation legislation allows for sweeping changes in an attempt to change current laws. It is argued that is could save up to 40,000 fatalities on our highways every year.

The principles that outline this bill identify safety as an important objective. In addition to the safety improvements other mandates would require electronic on-board recorders that ensure truck drivers comply with hours-of-service driving restrictions as an example of new regulations.

There are many public safety advocates that are lobbying to have the bill include the following:

    * Comprehensive rollover occupant protection
    * Vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility with regards to SUV’s
    * Pedestrian and cyclist safety
    * Protecting against heavier and bigger trucks
