The driver of a Chrysler Sebring was speeding and tried to pass the car in front of them in Wayne County, North Carolina (NC). This proved to be a fatal error. A pickup truck was traveling the opposite direction and slammed head-on with the Sebring, according to witn.com. Four people were killed in the car-truck wreck including both drivers.
My deepest condolences go out to the victims in this terrible accident. To make matters even worse, all of the victims were young and had their whole lives ahead of them.
This accident highlights a risk many drivers take on a daily basis - trying to pass another vehicle on the road. It is troubling that we are so concerned about getting to our destination that we throw caution to the wind and risk getting hit by another vehicle just to get slightly ahead on the road.
There are times when it is legal to pass a car on the road, but you need to be extremely cautious when trying to make this move. For example, do not ever try to pass a car when you are approaching a curve or cannot clearly see the traffic ahead. It is these situations where major crashes and serious injuries occur. The safest thing to do is simply not attempt to pass the other car. Yes, you may be stuck behind a slower driver, but that a lot better than winding up in the hospital with a head wound, spinal cord injury, or some other life-threatening injury.
