Emmanuel Mejia was going about his day emptying trash cans for the Florida Refuse Service. This was his day job as he pursued his true passion as an amateur boxer. Sadly, his dreams of a career in boxing came to an end when a 2007 Suzuki slammed into him causing major injuries.
Mr. Mejia lost both of his legs, his right index finger, and half of his right thumb.
The driver of the Suzuki was texting and driving, according to TheLedger.com. As a result, he was charged with a third degree felony and could spend the next five years in federal prison.
Mr. Mejia's life was changed forever, but he continues to push forward and is just happy to be alive.
This terrible accident is a prime example of why texting and driving is so incredibly dangerous. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, but you could wind up seriously injuring other people and irrevocably altering their lives.
"Nobody should be texting and driving," said Mejia.
Very true.
So the next time you're in your car, restrain yourself from whipping out that Blackberry to text a friend and invest in hands-free technology for the phone. Do whatever you can to prevent the risk of distracted driving (check out our FREE special report on the epidemic that is distracted driving).
