Second Victim Dies in Moped Accident, Driver Facing More Charges

Comments (0)

Two people were killed when a car smashed into the moped they were riding. The accident occurred on U.S. 601 near Macedonia Church Road, about 3 miles south of the Monroe city limits.

According to police reports, a car operated by a 22-year-old Wingate woman was driving in the left northbound lane of the road when the woman drove into the moped, which was driving ahead of her in the same lane. The impact threw both the passenger and the driver off of the moped and into the median lane. The car continued to drag the moped about 300 feet.

The moped passenger, a 50-year-old Marshville woman, was killed instantly. The driver, a 62 year-old man also from Marshville, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, but died two days later from his injuries.

The driver of the car had been charged with DUI and felony death by vehicle and is now facing a second felony count after the death of the second victim. State troopers report that the driver’s blood alcohol count at the time of the accident was over the legal limit. Accident investigators were also looking into whether fog in the area may have been a factor in the fatal crash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 30 people die in alcohol related deaths every day in this country.
