Rocky Mount Man Killed in Rear-End Collision

Comments (0)

A Rocky Mount man was killed when the vehicle he was driving was rear-ended by another vehicle. The accident occurred on Highway 43 in Pinetops, N.C. near Davistown-Mercer Road, close to Southwest Edgecombe High School.

According to North Carolina State Troopers, the 39 year-old victim was driving northbound, at approximately 6 p.m., when he was hit from behind by a Nissan Altima. The impact caused the victim’s vehicle to swerve over the center line, and into oncoming traffic. He was hit by an SUV, traveling southbound.

The SUV was being driven by a Macclefield woman, who along with her three children, ages 11, 5 and 1, were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries they received in the fatal crash.

Police have charged the driver of the Nissan with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed. The investigation concluded that weather conditions did not contribute to the deadly crash.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that almost 30 percent of all auto accidents involve rear-end collisions, approximately 3 million crashes per year. There are hundreds of victims who are killed annually, and thousands more left seriously injured. Some of the more common type of serious injuries from rear-end collisions include whiplash, head trauma, neck and back injuries, severely fractured or broken bones, and facial injuries.

Speeding is one of the most common reasons for a rear-end crash, as well as distracted driving, tailgating, drowsy driving and driving under the influence. If you have lost a loved one in a rear-end collision, contact a dedicated North Carolina wrongful death attorney to find out what legal recourse you may have against the at-fault driver.
