Three people were seriously injured due to a red light runner in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC). The reckless action occurred at the intersection of North Church Street and Fifth Street, according to wcnc.com. The at-fault driver ran a red light and smashed into another car creating a chain reaction where the hit car wound up on the sidewalk hitting two pedestrian. In total, four people suffered injuries from this car wreck.
We don't know whether the at-fault driver was distracted or simply decided to run the red light, but the police are still determining whether or not to file charges.
Unfortunately, red light running accidents are quite common in the North Carolina and all across the United States. In fact, nearly 900 people were killed and roughly 153,000 people were seriously injured in car crashes that involved a red light runner in 2007, according to stopredlightrunning.com.
Think about that for a moment. Hundreds of thousands of lives are affected - some permanently due to spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, or loss of a limb - because a driver was reckless and couldn't wait to proceed through an intersection. And losing almost 1,000 lives in these types of preventable wrecks is simply unacceptable.
We need to use this accident as a reminder of how important it is to follow the rules of the road and obey traffic signals. Running a red light is a recipe for disaster and can have life-altering consequences.
