Pickup Truck Hits, Kills Good Samaritan in Currituck County, NC

Comments (0)

An intended good deed turned tragic for a man who pulled over at the intersection of Short Cut Road and Barco Road in Currituck County, North Carolina (NC), late at night on July 12, 2012.

An NC Highway Patrol official told WAVY-TV 10 that the Good Samaritan lost his life when hit by pickup truck as he was attempting to help another driver get his stalled vehicle started and off the rural highway. The person originally in need of assistance was also badly injured in the collision.

While the injured man is expected to survive, police responding to the scene of the fatal accident determined he had been driving drunk and charged him with DWI. No charges have yet been filed against the pickup truck driver.

The North Carolina Wrongful Death Lawyers' Perspective

Any driver approaching a disabled vehicle or accident must, at a minimum, slow down and make all reasonable efforts to avoid a second collision. These rules have been codified in North Carolina's move over law for the protection of police, firefighters, EMTs and other emergency responders. They also must be observed any time people may be out their cars or trucks and on foot in the roadway. While it is currently unclear why the pickup truck driver hit the two men, it seems likely that the deadly accident would not have occurred if the at-fault driver had exercised more caution.
