Pedestrian Hit and Killed by Drunk Driver in Charlotte

Comments (0)

Drunk driving has claimed another victim in North Carolina. According to police, a 53-year-old man was struck and killed in Charlotte early Sunday morning, as he was attempting to cross the street.

The fatal DUI crash occurred at the 4900 block of N. Tryon Street. The driver, who police say is 23-years-old, was driving his 2006 Honda Civic northbound at a “high rate of speed” when he struck the victim with the car. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The driver was transferred to Carolinas Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police charged him with involuntary manslaughter, felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, and for having an open container of alcohol. As the investigation of the fatal accident is still ongoing, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department asked that anyone who witnessed the incident contact them.

Despite the ongoing attempt to educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving, millions of drivers still do it – resulting in the deaths of thousands of people every year. More than 1.5 million drivers are arrested each year for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and of those arrested, half are driving on a suspended license at the time of their arrest. Before a drunk driver is actually arrested, statistics show that they have most likely driven drunk at least 100 times before that arrest.

What do these statistics mean? They mean that roughly every hour, someone is killed in this country by a drunk driver. They mean that every year, more than 10,000 families become victims of drunk drivers, struggling with the tragic loss of their loved one.

For those victims fortunate enough to survive a drunk driving accident, the debilitating injuries often lead to a lifetime of pain and loss. Our North Carolina law firm has successfully represented many clients against the drunk drivers who forever changed our clients’ lives.
