Passenger Killed When Drunk Pickup Driver Flips Truck in Berkeley County, SC

Comments (0)

The woman behind the wheel of a pickup truck that ran off the road and flipped into a ditch along Copper Store Road in Berkeley County, South Carolina (SC), is facing multiple felony charges for causing the death of a passenger in her vehicle. The fatal wreck occurred around 5:30 pm on September 11, 2014. Police determined the driver was operating her vehicle under the influence of alcohol and that her license had previously been suspended.

The man who lost his life was thrown from the pickup as it rolled over. He appeared not to have been wearing a seat belt, but the greatest risk he faced was the impairment of the person giving him a ride.

My Carolina personal injury and wrongful death attorney colleagues and I have written before about the dangers drunk and drugged drivers pose for passengers who are friends and family members. While no one should feel safe traveling with an impaired driver, children and longtime acquaintances too often put too much trust in parents and people they know well. When that trust gets betrayed in the worst way possible and a preventable death occurs, the tragedy is compounded almost beyond bearing.

The solution to avoiding a DUI/DWI accident is so simple: Do not drive after getting drunk or high. We urge more people to make that wise choice.
