Out-of-Control Log Truck Kills SUV Driver Near Clinton, NC

Comments (0)

A Sampson County, North Carolina (NC), crash involving a work van, log truck and SUV left the driver of the private vehicle dead on the afternoon of July 14, 2016. The fatal multivehicle wreck occurred on U.S. 421 just north of the town of Clinton.

The accident unfolded in three stages. The driver of the van stopped on the highway to make a left-hand turn in a telecommunication business. The log truck operator failed to stop in time and clipped the van on its left bumper. The log truck continued moving forward following the rear-end collision, running off the far shoulder of U.S. 421.

The log truck driver then overcorrected his steering, causing his loaded flatbed to roll over across the lanes of traffic. The truck crushed the SUV, and the woman behind the wheel of that small vehicle died from her injuries at the scene. State Highway Patrol officers have filed preliminary charges for driving left of center and causing a death against the log truck driver.

Crash investigators did not state why the commercial truck driver was unable to avoid hitting the telecom van from behind. He may have been speeding or been distracted. It is also possible that he received inadequate training or was operating with defective or poorly maintained equipment like bad brakes or bald tires. Figuring out the root cause of the deadly accident is essential for assigning liability for compensating the family of the deceased victim for a wrongful death. A combination of errors by the log truck driver and unsafe equipment would leave both him and his employer responsible.

Consulting with an experienced and empathetic Carolina wrongful death attorney would help the grieving family members find answers and protect their rights.
