Number of Victims Killed on the Job in N.C. Doubles in 2014

A new report show that the number of work-related fatalities that occurred in North Carolina nearly doubled previous years.

According to the report, which was prepared by the state’s Department of Labor, there were 44 people who were killed on the job in 2014, up from 23 fatalities in 2013. This was the highest number of deaths since 2011. That year, 53 North Carolina workers were killed on the job.

The numbers from the DOL reveal that all but one of those victims were men. The youngest victim killed was 20-years-old, the oldest was 82.

The area of industry that had the most increase in deaths was the construction industry, which accounted for 19 of the fatalities recorded for 2014. Statistics show that the majority of construction accidents happen the first two to three months a worker is on the job. In some cases, these accidents occur the very first day the worker is on the job site. This is usually an indication that there is not proper training being given to employees.

Another industry which saw the number of fatalities spike was manufacturing. Fatal accidents more than doubled in 2014, going from four victims to nine victims in one year. The service industry, which had one fatal accident in 2013, lost six workers in 2014.
