NCCU senior killed in car wreck on Highway 55

A senior at North Carolina Central University was killed in a car accident that took place on March 31, 2015 at the intersection of N.C. Highway 55 and Crete Street in Durham, North Carolina, according to an ABC 11 news report. The deceased student was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck by the driver of a Honda on Highway 55 when he crossed the center line and collided with a northbound Chevrolet. Both of the drivers were injured in the crash.

The Durham police have said that speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. Speeding, which is defined by smartmotorist.com as "exceeding the posted speed limit or driving too fast for conditions, is a factor in nearly one third of all fatal crashes." Criminal charges have been filed against the driver.

We send our condolences the victim's family at this time. It is a tragedy to lose a loved one in an accident and by all accounts the victim here was a bright young woman with a promising future.

While nothing can bring back a lost loved one, legal resolutions may help provide some measure of closure for the deceased's family. It stands to reason that a civil legal remedy may be appropriate in this case, in addition to the criminal charges that have been filed.

Because we are a plaintiff side personal injury law firm we have experience litigating various civil claims, including what are known as wrongful death suits. A wrongful death claim is a civil legal claim that seeks damages when a family member dies as a result of the neglect or wrongful actions of another.  Va. § 8.01-50.

If you or a family member needs to speak with a North Carolina personal injury lawyer to discuss the legal options available to you, give us a call today.
