NC Troopers Calling on Drivers to Use Caution at School Bus Stops After 2 Children Killed This School Year

Comments (0)

What happened:

North Carolina Troopers are urging drivers to slow down and use caution when approaching school bus stops after two children have been tragically killed already this school year. The first incident took place in August on Highway 43 in Rocky Mount. A 7 year-old girl was running across the road when she was struck by a truck. The driver of the truck told police he didn’t see the little girl dart across the street. He has not been charged.

The most recent incident occurred in October on Highway 27 in Coats. A 12 year-old boy was trying to board his school bus when he was hit by a van. The driver of the van has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle.

Police have implemented Operation Strong Arm and have video cameras in place for drivers who choose to ignore the stop arm, stop sign and red flashing lights of a school bus as it stops. According to a report on WITN, last year in just one day, North Carolina school bus drivers counted nearly 3700 violations with 13,658 buses on the road.

The North Carolina Injury Lawyer Perspective:

There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a child and our hearts go out to both these children’s families. Drivers need to heed the advice of the troopers and slow down and pay attention. The families of these children may be able to pursue wrongful death claims against the drivers of these incidents and should consult with a North Carolina wrongful death lawyer.
