A 35 year-old Charlotte, N.C. man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a reckless driving chase. According to law enforcement reports, the incident began in the parking lot of the Arboretum Shopping Center on Pineville Matthews Road in the early evening, when an officer was notified by a patron that there was a man slumped upon the wheel on his car.
The officer approached the vehicle and tried to wake up the driver. The man became angry and aggressive, so the officer attempted to arrest him. The driver attempted to flee in the car, hitting the police officer with his vehicle. As he was driving through the parking lot, he hit several other cars, as well as a police cruiser. The man drove his car up a curb, causing the car to flip over.
The man jumped out of his car and began to run away. A second police officer attempted to stop him, but was injured by the man, who continued to run onto Pineville Matthews Road. He jumped into a vehicle that was stopped on the street and sped off. The driver of that vehicle had noticed the scene in the parking lot and had stopped and got out his car to watch. That driver was not injured when the man stole his car.
The man drove off up Pineville-Matthews Road, hitting two more cars, flipping one of them over. He then climbed out of the wrecked, stolen car and attempted to run off, but police officers were able to capture him.
Besides the two police officers who were injured, there were two other people who were injured in the man’s driving spree. Those two victims were transported to Carolinas Medical Center. The man has been charged with driving while impaired, and is also facing felony hit-and-run and reckless driving, resisting arrest, and assault charges.
Luckily, in this case, the man was caught and brought into custody, but far too often, hit-and-run drivers who cause accidents and injuries are never caught. In those incidents, the victims may still be able to collect benefits under their own insurance policies, under their UIM coverage.
