Although some people ride motorcycles all year long, the warmer months usually result in an increase in motor bike riders. Some prefer to take less-traveled roads in North Carolina (NC), while others use the same interstates and highways that cars and trucks commonly use.
The traffic laws in NC are the same for motor bike riders as other drivers. These include ordinances on speeding, improper lane changing, and, most importantly, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
But some reason, many motorcycle riders think the rules of the road do not apply to them. They believe because a motorcycle is smaller than a car, they can take chances that car drivers cannot. This is simply not the case. In fact, you are more likely to suffer a serious injury while on a motorcycle than while in a car, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
Serious personal injuries like a broken neck, severed limb or traumatic brain injury are quite common when a motorcycle slams into a car or truck, and vice versa. Tragically, many motorcyclists lose their life in these types of wrecks as well.
The best way to avoid a wreck is to exercise caution, be vigilant, and always wear a helmet while on the road operating your motorcycle. I understand the desire to throw caution to the wind and see how fast the bike can go, but that's just a recipe for disaster. No motor bike ride is worth losing your life for.
