Metro Train Strikes and Kills Man in WA

The Washington Examiner reports that a man was killed by a Metro train at the Farragut North Station the morning of Saturday, January 15^th, 2011. The victim, who was unable to be indentified at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene by D.C. fire and emergency services.

Authorities are presently investigating the accident, according to Metro spokeswoman Angela Gates. The man's death shut down the train station for approximately two hours, beginning at noon on that Saturday, with no trains being allowed to stop there.

Whoever this poor man was, let us hope that his friends and family are able to cope with their grieving during these dark hours. Let us also hope that Metro did everything in its power to prevent the tragedy from occurring, and that the company continues to do so to prevent future railroad deaths like this one.

Perhaps the victim was merely attempting to cross the tracks in a hurry. If you ever find yourself in this situation, make sure that there are no flashing lights or ringing bells that indicate on oncoming train. Never try to "race the train" to see if you can cross in time-the odds are good that you will lose the race.
