Man Crushed between Logging Trucks Dies Instantly in Newberry SC Accident

Comments (0)

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal logging truck accident which claimed the life of a 51-year-old Jonesville man.

According to details released by law enforcement, the victim drove a logging truck into Westfraser Inc., which is located on College Street in Newberry, at approximately 5 p.m. He was there to deliver a load of wood. When he pulled into the lot of the company, there was a line of other trucks ahead of him. While waiting in the line, the victim exited his vehicle and walked to the back of the truck in order to remove a load warning flag.

At the same time, the driver of another logging truck which had pulled in behind the victim’s truck, also exited his truck and walked to the back of it. The truck, now with an empty cab, began rolling forward and pinned the victim between the two trucks. The weight of the trucks crushed the man and he died immediately.

One of the major causes of truck accident fatalities is equipment failure. Although some of these failures occur because of defective equipment, the majority happen because the companies which own the trucks fail to properly maintain their equipment. Some of the most common failures include:

  • Tire blowouts due to wear and tear;
  • Failure to maintain brakes, causing them to fail or malfunction;
  • Purposely depowering the brakes in order to cut down on wear of tires and brakes, however, this can cause brakes to fail and truck to flip over; and
  • Failure to maintain transmission;

If you’ve lost a family member in a fatal truck crash, you may be considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit and have many questions about where to turn next. Contact a dedicated North Carolina wrongful death attorney to find out what legal options you may have against the trucking company and driver responsible for the tragic loss of your loved one.
