Head-on Collision at Castle Hayne Road; Wilmington, NC

Comments (0)

What Happened

Two people were injured when their vehicles collided on Castle Hayne Road on February 20, 2013.

The accident shut down the road after a northbound sedan ran head-on into a southbound SUV in a turn lane. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals with personal injuries.

Police are still trying to piece together how the accident happened. The only two witnesses were the two drivers involved in the accident.

The North Carolina Personal Injury Lawyers’ Perspective

Drivers should be able to drive down the road without worrying about unsafe or reckless drivers, but, unfortunately, not everyone follows the common sense rules that keep everyone safe. Driving in the proper lane has to be the most basic rule of the road. It's one of the first things taught in driver's education classes, and it's so basic most people don't even think about it. Yet failure to abide by this rule can result in catastrophic injuries, even death. There are many reasons why a vehicle ends up in the wrong lane of traffic; fatigued drivers, drunk driving, dangerous roadways, failure to yield right of way, or unsafe lane change. A Texas study of wrong-way accidents found that the most frequent origin of wrong-way incidents is the freeway exit ramp when a driver entered in the wrong direction. The study also revealed that between 50 and 75 percent of wrong-way accident involve an impaired wrong-way driver who had been drinking or was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
