Fatal Car Wreck Seriously Injures 4 Kids in Cherryville, North Carolina Collision

Four children are among those seriously injured in a fatal wreck near Cherryville, North Carolina (N.C.).  Troopers say both drivers were driving drunk.Troopers said David Wayne Cleary's car was going about 70 mph when it crossed the center line on Hwy. 274 at Beam Street, just south of Cherryville city limits, and struck a truck driven by Richard McDonald Friday night.

Cleary died at the scene.  His fiance', Rebecca Singleton, and her two children, ages 6 and 7, were injured.   Singleton's children were listed in critical condition at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte Sunday night, after suffering from multiple broken bones and deep cuts.  Singleton was listed in fair condition at CMC.

McDonald, his son and stepson were taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, and their conditions were not available Sunday night.  A neighbor said McDonald was still in the hospital, but his 5-year-old son had been released.Deana Jackson said she arrived home just after the wreck, which happened in front of her house around 7 p.m."I saw the truck right there, and the car was over there," she said, pointing to two orange X's painted about 20 feet apart on Hwy. 274, also known as Tryon Courthouse Road.  "I don't see how anybody survived.  It was horrible."

The worst part, said Jackson, was watching neighbors trying to pry the doors off the wrecked cars to rescue the children as they screamed and cried inside.  "The terror that those children were in -- screaming -- I think that's what bothers me," she said.Trooper J.J. Letcavage said the Highway Patrol received calls about a car speeding and swerving in and out of its lane on Hwy. 274 just before the wreck.  When he caught up, Cleary and McDonald had already collided.  Letcavage said he could smell alcohol on both drivers.
