Failure Rate for DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Devices Is So High That Recall Was Issued

The failure rate for ASR hip replacements, produced by DePuy Orthopedics, was twice the industry standard. In fact, 1 in 8 people who used these DePuy hip replacements needed a repair within five years, according to arthritistoday.org.  This is shockingly high considering most people who receive a hip replacement don't need another replacement for the rest of their life.

This higher-than-average failure rate led DePuy to issue a recall of the ASR XL Acetabular System, which is used for total hip replacements, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which is used in a newer kind of bone-conserving procedure.

When the components of these hip replacements start to detach from the bone, the pain can be excruciating for the patient. Infection or dislocation is a risk and a new replacement requires going under the knife again, which has its own unique set of risks (i.e. medical negligence or surgical error).

Report indicate roughly 93,000 hip replacement patients may have been harmed by defective hip replacements, if the DePuy ASR hip device was used in their surgery. You may have already gotten the bad news from your doctor about the need to be screened for possible follow-up surgery.

If this is the case and you or a loved one has suffered serious pain from the DePuy hip replacement device, consult with an injury attorney immediately so you can find out what legal options are available to you.
