DUI Hit and Run Kills Motorcycle Riders in Anderson Co., SC

Comments (0)

husband and wife sharing a motorcycle lost their lives when they were hit from behind by a drunk driver in Anderson County, South Carolina (SC). The fatal rear-end collision occurred a little before 3 am on July 3, 2016, near the interchange between Highway 28 and Highway 24.

The at-fault driver originally fled the scene of the deadly crash, but police apprehended him within an hour. He was found intoxicated and now faces multiple traffic and criminal charges that include driving under the influence and causing a hit-and-run accident that resulted in death. Multiple news outlets identified the deceased victims who were ejected from their bike as Brian Smith and Shannon Smith.

Driving drunk is never a good idea. This Anderson County driver compounded his initial reckless error by following the motorcycle riders too closely, possibly speeding and failing to give the motorcyclists time and space to operate safely. He also tried to escape responsibility by driving off. My Carolina wrongful death law firm colleagues and I applaud South Carolina law enforcement personnel for tracking down and arresting the inebriated and fleeing driver. Their quick actions will allow surviving family members to receive justice in criminal court and also pursue compensation for their sudden and heartbreaking losses through insurance claims and civil lawsuits.
