Drunk Driver Critically Injures Schoolgirl at Bus Stop

Comments (0)

A North Carolina man faces hit and run, assault and driving under the influence of alcohol charges after striking and critically injuring a sixth-grader at a bus stop in Guilford County. The November 14, 2016, pedestrian crash happened shortly before 8 am on Huffine Mill Road in McLeansville, NC.

According to police, the at-fault driver ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected his steering, crossed onto the left shoulder and knocked or dragged the schoolgirl 40 feet. She is expected to survive, but it is unclear if she will suffer any permanent disability from the crash.

The man fled the scene, and State Highway Patrol troopers found him at home. Tests revealed his blood alcohol concentration to be .21, nearly three times the legal limit.

This near-fatal wreck illustrates the ever-present danger of drunk drivers. Rush hour on a Monday morning is not safe, nor is a middle school bus stop. People must make the responsible decision to stay out of the driver's seat after they have made the earlier choice to become intoxicated. When they do not, they put everyone's life and health in danger.

My Carolina personal injury law firm colleagues and I thank law enforcement officials for quickly tracking down and apprehending the man who hit and hurt the 11-year-old child. Identifying a hit-and-run driver makes holding the person criminally liable possible and also gives the injured girl's parent a chance to hold him accountable for settling insurance claims for medical bills and other crash-related expenses.
