Drugged Driver Accused of Causing Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Mount Airy, NC

Comments (0)

A hit-and-run pedestrian crash near Mount Airy, North Carolina (NC), on the morning of May 13, 2015, left one person dead, a second person injured and the at-fault driver facing felony charges for fleeing the scene and driving while intoxicated. The fatal wreck occurred near the intersection of Ararat Road and Eldora Road in the Ararat community.

A state trooper quoted by the Mount Airy News noted that the driver who lost control of his car and struck the group of people standing and sitting in a yard was impaired by "a substance other than alcohol." In addition to inflicting deadly internal injuries on the deceased victim, the driver who ran off the road and then attempted to escape responsibility also damaged at least six other vehicles. Law enforcement officials continued collecting evidence throughout the week and may file additional charges against the drugged driver.

One of the criminal offenses that is likely to remain is "habitual DWI," which translates to repeatedly driving despite losing one's license and, often, spending time in jail for operating a motor vehicle after getting drunk and/or stoned. Second, third, and more offenses for DUI/DWI are not uncommon. Addictions can be difficult to overcome, and intoxicated people can make reckless decisions regarding their safety and others' lives. Recognizing all those realities, however, cannot excuse drunk and drugged driving. The consequences of the poor choice can be too great, as was sadly proven south of Mount Airy.

My Carolina wrongful death attorney colleagues and I send our heartfelt condolences out to the friends and family members of the man killed by this repeatedly impaired driver.
