South Carolina Highway Patrol released details of a tragic accident that occurred on Interstate-84 in Wellford. The accident killed four people and shut traffic down for hours. Police say a total of six vehicles were involved in the crash.

The incident began when a state trooper saw a car driving south in the northbound lanes of Business 85 near the 2 to 3 mile marker. The car was driving at a very high rate of speed. The trooper began driving parallel, in the southbound lane, with the wrong-way driver, and had his lights and sirens going. The driver ignored the trooper and continued to drive the wrong way before he crashed into six other vehicles.

Killed in the crash were two women, ages 21 and 22 years old, as well as a 27-year-old man. The three dead victims were in a car together that the 21 year-old victim had just purchased the day before. Three other people were also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car going the wrong way, a 60-year-old man from Spartanburg, was also killed in the crash. Information contained in the state law enforcement criminal background records reveal that the driver had an extensive record for traffic, drunkenness and drug offenses spanning the past four decades. The records reveal two DUI convictions, as well as multiple convictions for driving with a suspended license. The driver was declared a habitual offender in 1992 and 1994. Police continue to investigate whether or not alcohol and/or drugs played a role in this crash.
