Disneyland Resort Closes Space Mountain after OSHA Citations Issued

Comments (0)

What happened:

The Los Angeles Times has reported that Disneyland Resort, in California, has shut down some of its rides, including Space Mountain, over safety concerns and possible OSHA violations. The roller coaster was closed along with the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride and Soarin’ Over California ride after the company received citations from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The citations were related to an incident that happened in November 2012 when an employee of a contractor was seriously injured while performing maintenance on the exterior of the Space Mountain ride. During the investigation into the accident, Cal/OSHA discovered that Disneyland Resort had completed ‘Fall Protection Assessment Reports’ in August of 2006 and failed to adequately correct these known fall hazards that existed on the exterior of Space Mountain. The investigation also revealed that the company failed to have approved anchorages or approved tie-backs for contract employees to attach to when performing scheduled exterior building maintenance.

The North Carolina Injury Lawyer Perspective:

Although the closure of the rides by Disneyland Resort was voluntarily, it didn’t occur until months after an accident where a worker was seriously injured, and only after the citations were received. The discovery that Disneyland knew for several years of the falling risk hazard to employees is disturbing.

The contractor who was injured should contact a personal injury law firm to seek compensation for pain and loss he suffered because of the accident. Our North Carolina personal injury law firm has successfully represented many clients who were injured in work-related accidents, including a client who received $100,000 settlement in fork-lift accident.
