After more than half a century on the market, Darvocet (also known as propoxyphene) was taken off the U.S. market. Studies showed an increased risk of heart arrhythmias, even in patients who did not have heart issues.
Some estimate that Darvocet, which is manufactured by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc., has killed over 1,000 people in the U.S. over the past five years, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimate that Darvon was used by 10 million people in 2009. It is somewhat surprising that the FDA did not take Darvocet off the market sooner since they have known about the negative Darvocet side effects for years. Unfortunately, they dragged their feet and the dangerous prescription drug remained on the market longer than it probably should have. For example, Britain took Darvocet off the market back in 2005.
