Cumberland County Bus Driver Charged after Fayetteville, North Carolina Bus Accident

A Cumberland County bus driver has been charged with failure to reduce speed after a bus accident in Fayetteville, North Carolina (NC).

The bus driver was traveling on South Reilly Road when they rear-ended a dump truck at the intersection of South Reilly Road and Bronwyn Street. At the time of the accident there were five special needs children riding on the bus. Two students sustained injuries in the crash. One student was taken to Womack Army Medical Center, and the other student was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Thankfully, the children’s injuries were non-life threatening.

This is the second accident involving a Cumberland County bus this year. My colleague, Richard Shapiro, recently wrote an article about another school bus accident that fatally injured a passenger in a vehicle. The vehicle the woman was riding in turned in front of the school bus. The passenger later died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Tragically, school bus accidents are not uncommon. Even if the bus driver is not at fault accidents still occur. Most commonly these accidents happen outside of the school bus, where drivers are prone to ignore safety laws. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction recently reported that over 2,000 school bus safety violations occur every day. Drivers simply ignore the school bus stop signs and the results can be fatal. A young girl was struck and killed in Fayetteville while trying to cross the street at her bus stop earlier this year.

As a parent, when you send your child to school on a school bus you expect them to arrive safely and the rise in school bus accidents in North Carolina (NC) has some parents questioning that safety.
