A terrible wreck that killed five people started Monday evening when a dump truck struck a bridge and backed traffic up. Seven cars came to a stop on Interstate 26 in Asheville, North Carolina (NC), reports Channel 4 News. If the story had stopped here, it would have just been a typical interstate backup.
Instead the unimaginable occurred, a second tractor-trailer came barreling down the road and hit the last vehicle in line. The impact created a chain reaction, that crunched together the six vehicles that were stopped in traffic between the first and the second tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then drug one of the vehicles across the I-26 median, where it and the car finally came to rest.
What a terrible thing, one minute husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend are stopped in traffic maybe even talking about dinner. The next minute they are in a terrifying accident. I hope that the families find justice and my heartfelt sorrow goes out to all affected by this devastating crash.
Trooper Williamson said he saw no evidence that the big rig driver had tried to slow before the collision and they were unsure of his speed. 23% of all tractor-trailer wrecks can be contributed to speeding.
It's amazing that all the other vehicles were able to stop, so why couldn't the truck driver stop? We're not sure, but we do know that the state Highway Patrol charged the Wisconsin truck driver with four counts of involuntary manslaughter and one charge of assault in connection with the wreck.
