At-Fault Driver in Fatal South Carolina Head-On Collision Fled Scene, Tried to Flee State

The man now charged with causing a fatal head-on collision on Pelzer Highway/Route 8 outside of Easley, South Carolina (SC), just after 1 am, December 11, 2011, was tracked down by state police at a Columbia Greyhound bus station two days after the crash. According to WIS-TV 10, the at-fault driver had originally fled the scene of the deadly accident involving his pickup truck and the victim's car. He was caught trying to flee the state.

Background information on the pickup driver provided in an Independent Mail newspaper report indicates that the man had plenty of reason to try to avoid capture. Past traffic violations had earned him convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol and other arrests for DUI, crossing the center line and causing accidents, speeding and driving with a suspended license.

It's questionable whether the at-fault driver should have been behind the wheel at all. But he was, and, because he once again crossed into the path of oncoming traffic, a 24-year-old is dead and he faces many other likely crash-related charges and a possible long prison sentence.

As Carolina personal attorneys who have helped many victims of head-on collisions, we're pleased that this driver who, by all accounts, took the life of another person did not succeed in his attempt to evade justice.
