Arrest for Fatal Hit and Run Made a Month After Crash

Comments (0)

The deceased victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash in Beaufort County, South Carolina (SC), and his family may receive some justice in the wake of an arrest of a woman who law officials believe to be the driver responsible for leaving the scene of a rear-end collision. The deadly crash happened near the intersection of U.S. 258/Fording Island Road and Burnt Church Road in Bluffton on the night of November 21, 2016. The suspected hit-and-run driver was jailed on December 16.

According to news reports, the initial collision left a bike rider critically injured in a ditch beside the highway. He was discovered about an hour after getting hit, and he died from his severe injuries at a hospital. Police kept their investigation into the incident open until they collected enough evidence to bring a driver into custody.

This illustrates both the difficulty and the possibility of identifying people who flee crash scenes. Tracking such negligent drivers down is essential both for holding the person accountable for committing crimes and for allowing victims or their loved ones to file and collect on insurance claims. No one should be able to escape responsibility and liability for causing personal injuries or wrongful deaths.

My Carolina wrongful death law firm colleagues and I applaud South Carolina officials for their dedication to seeing justice done. We also send our deepest condolences out to the friends and family members of the Bluffton bicyclist who lost his life.
