A rear-end collision on I-85 left 13 people in a church van hospitalized with injuries. The wreck in Anderson County, South Carolina (SC), near the Georgia border occurred at around 9:30 am on September 26, 2016, and State Highway Patrol officers cited a pickup driver for causing the crash.
The pickup struck a corner of the van, causing it to spin and flip over onto its side. Most of the passengers were senior citizens, and they suffered injuries despite wearing seat belts. Three of the victims remained in critical condition the following day, but the at-fault driver walked away unscathed.
The man behind the wheel faces a preliminary charge of reckless driving. This is not a specific traffic violation; it can cover following too closely, making an unsafe lane change, becoming distracted while moving in traffic, or exceeding the posted speed limit by a significant amount. The exact nature of the pickup driver's mistake matters less than the nearly fatal results. Had the man exercised more care and caution, the accident may have been avoided altogether.
My Carolina personal injury attorney colleagues send our wishes for full and speedy recoveries to each of the church group members injured in this rear-end collision. We also want to take this opportunity to urge drivers to operate their vehicles safely and in accordance with traffic laws.
